Measuring Length

This week in numeracy we have been measuring length. We started out measuring our heights using a range of materials such as pop sticks, counters, hand spans, feet and giant's feet We also measured the corridor using giant's feet! We got a lot of different answers!
Later we talked about why it is useful to have a standard form of measure and how we can tell other people measurements of things in centimetres and metres. We can measure centimetres and metres using rulers, tape measures and trundle wheels. We played a game called 'Guess the Length' in pairs. To play this game we needed to pick a card from a deck, guess which line length we thought matched the number shown on the card, measure the line and if we were right we got to highlight that line. We also went outside for a measuring scavenger hunt!

Place Value

This week in numeracy we have been learning about place value.  We went outside for a place value scavenger hunt where we had to find cards hidden around the school with pictures of numbers made out of MAB blocks.  We then had to write down the number represented on the cards.

CALC

One of the activities we did during our Creating A Learning Community (CALC) program at the start of the year was to think about our dreams and goals and what we would like to achieve this year and in the future.  We made a display about the students from our class reaching for our dreams.

Welcome to Grade 2

It is wonderful to be back at school. The students in 2B are very excited to be in Grade 2 and have made a fantastic start to the school year. Some things they are looking forward to about the year include having their very own pencil cases to take care of and the Grade 2 sleepover that will be taking place later in the year. For the first two weeks of school we have been working on our CALC (Creating A Learning Community) program. We have been doing lots of activities to help us get to know each other, think about what makes a great student, teacher and classroom and set goals for the year. We have decided on class rules and each child has been given a special monitor job to do for the term. We sang a song at assembly on Friday with 2A about being friends. This year we have changed our focus slightly for our Student of the Week certificates. We will now be awarding these certificates for students who display one of our Kerrimuir CARE values: * Caring for people and the environment * Achieving our best * Respecting ourselves and others * Educating ourselves for the future We are looking forward to a fabulous year in 2014. Thank you for visiting our class blog. Mrs Peterson
