Painting our Dragons

Today we finally got to start painting the papier mache dragons that we have been working on all term.  They are now starting to look more like dragons.  We can't wait until they are finished!

Goodbye Mr K

On Friday we said goodbye to Mr K.  It has been wonderful having Mr K in our classroom for seven weeks while he was completing his teaching practice to become a teacher.  We all had such a great time with Mr K and were sad to see him go.  Some of the parents organised a surprise party for Mr K and we had a lovely time at the party.

Premier's Reading Challenge

All the students in Prep A completed the Premier's Reading Challenge and on Friday were given their certificates.  We were especially excited to see some Leigh Hobbs illustrations on the certificates.  The characters; Horrible Harriet and Mr Chicken were ones that Leigh Hobbs taught us to draw when he visited our school.

Shirley Barber Visit

Yesterday the Prep students had a visit from the very talented author and illustrator, Shirley Barber.  It was amazing to see how well she could draw when she was just a little girl and then how her drawings developed as she grew up.  Her work is lovely and dreamlike.  We had a great time meeting Shirley.

This term we have been doing lots of work about dragons.  We have read stories about dragons.  We have written stories about dragons.  We have used Tux Paint to draw dragons on the computers.  We are even making our very own dragon toys out of papier mache.  This is Chloe's Tux Paint dragon.

Fire Education

The Prep students at Kerrimuir have been learning all about how to stay safe around fires.

Good Fires
We learnt that there are some good fires such as candles on a birthday cake, heaters, ovens and stoves used for cooking, camp fires for toasting marshmallows.  There must always be adults watching when there is a fire.

Bad Fires
We learnt that there are bad fires.  Bad fires are dangerous and can hurt people.  Some bad fires are bush fires and house fires.  We should have smoke alarms in our houses to warn us if there is smoke or fire that could harm us.

What to Do in a Fire
We learnt some important things to do if there is a fire.
1. If there is a fire in our house we need to CRAWL DOWN LOW AND GO GO GO!
2. If our clothes are on fire we need to STOP, DROP, COVER, ROLL!
3. In an emergency we can call 000 for a fire engine, ambulance or the police.  We need to know our addresses so that we can tell the person on the phone where to come to help us.
4.  We had some homework to do with our families.  We had to check if we had a smoke alarm.  We also had to work out a meeting spot outside our house where all the members of our families would go if there was a fire.

The Fire Engine
Today we had a very exciting visit from some fire fighters.  We got to go outside and look at the fire engine.  We saw lots of things in the fire engine such as a first aid kit, a ladder and  lots of hoses.  We even got to squirt the hose and hear the siren!

The Life Ed Van

Today we went to the Life Ed van to meet Harold the Giraffe and Cathy.  They taught us all about healthy foods and how they can help our bodies stay strong and well.  Cereals, fruit, vegetables, dairy and meat help our bodies have energy to run and jump, our brains to have energy to think and our bodies to get better when we are sick.  We have painted pictures of Harold.
